Our tradition comes from the hermits who lived on Mount Carmel in the 12th century and later developed into the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (the Carmelites). It was deeply shaped by figures such as Teresa of Ávila, John of the Cross, and Thérèse of Lisieux.
Our monastery was founded on October 17, 1967, by foundresses from the Welden Monastery in Germany. Since then, our community has grown and flourished in the heart of Uganda, rooted in the rich soil of faith and the legacy of the Uganda Martyrs.
Our monastery sits within the Diocesan complex of Kiyinda-Mityana, near the Cathedral. It was here that three of the twenty-two Uganda Martyrs — St. Noa Mawaggali, St. Luke Baanabakintu, and St. Matia Mulumba — gave their lives for the Catholic faith between 1885 and 1887.
