The Heart of Our Carmelite Life

The Heart of Our Day

The Sacred Liturgy is the center and summit of our Carmelite life. Each day is structured around the celebration of the Eucharist and the chanting of the Divine Office, through which we sanctify the hours and unite ourselves to Christ's perpetual prayer to the Father.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

Each morning, we gather in our chapel to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is the source from which all our grace flows and the center toward which all our prayer is directed. We prepare for Mass with mental prayer and offer thanksgiving afterwards. The Eucharist is the food that sustains our contemplative life.

The Divine Office

Seven times a day, we gather in choir to chant the Divine Office, fulfilling the command of Scripture to "pray without ceasing." The Psalms, readings, and hymns of the Office sanctify the different hours of the day:

Morning

Lauds — Morning Prayer at sunrise
Terce — Mid-morning

Midday

Sext — Midday
None — Mid-afternoon

Evening

Vespers — Evening Prayer

Night

Compline — Night Prayer
Vigils — Night Office

Liturgical Life

Praying the Church's prayer is at the very heart of our vocation. Through the Liturgy of the Hours, we join our voices with the universal Church, offering praise and intercession to God. This rhythm of prayer transforms our day into a continuous act of worship, uniting us with the faithful around the world and with the angels and saints in heaven. As Carmelites, we consider the Divine Office not merely an obligation but a profound privilege — to stand before God on behalf of the Church and all humanity.

Eucharistic Adoration

Two hours each day are dedicated to silent mental prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. This time of quiet communion with Jesus in the Eucharist is the school of contemplative prayer. We also have weekly Holy Hour and Benediction on Sundays and Solemnities.

Liturgical Seasons

We follow the liturgical year closely, with special solemnity during Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and the great feasts of the Carmelite Order. The liturgical calendar shapes our prayer, our work, and even our recreation. We have a particular devotion to:

July 16 — Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Oct 15 — St. Teresa of Avila
Dec 14 — St. John of the Cross
Oct 1 — St. Thérèse of Lisieux
June 3 — Uganda Martyrs
